This is as rare as it gets, a '99 black Highlander 5-speed with the factory e-locker. It's not mine and I have no affiliation with the seller, just want to see it go to a loving ultimateyota family. :)

I'd be interested in seeing how much this goes for especially after our talk about KBB, 3rd gens and 5 speeds.

The CARMAX searchable database only goes back to 2000...there are only four 3rd gens available between the years 2000 and 2002 across the United States. A 2001 2WD base model for $12,849, a 2002 2WD SR5 for $13,450, a 2002 2WD Limited for $13,998 and the only 4WD model is a 2002 Limited for $14,599. These prices are consistent with the asking prices at the used car dealerships near my house. Granted, you generally don't pay asking price, but the 3rd gens have proven to be exceptionally good trucks and they still look awesome. Demand and used prices seem to reflect that. I sure like mine. :)

Is 9500 the going rate for a '99 4Runner on the west coast? I know it's a rare model, but 9500 seems kinda steep for a 3rd gen with 170k on it. I paid less than that, and my 5spd had 81k on it. Granted, I don't have an elocker, but still...

Cool 4runner thought! I wish I had an elocker.

drive over here, ill drop one in for ya!

9500 is a bit much... but i guess some people will pay that for what most would consider the perfect 3rd gen, and indeed the perfect 4runner.

im happy with my slushbox, except for the clear coat coming off of my hood and roof.

Surprisingly people in general are wanting a lot for the 4Runners.
I just had a 99' limited loaded with the e-locker come in to the shop last week, one I had my eye on last year when it came in.
It needs both cats and a climate control head unit, parts alone at my cost is 3k.
It also needs a body ECU which is another 300, Timing belt and all the goodies (last done at 59k, truck is at 143k now) radiator and a flush of that system as well as the trans fluid.

All and all 5k worth or repairs, guy wants 4k for it....

I kbb'd mine at $9,155. It also says it would be worth $9,555 if it were an auto.

Wow, who knew that 4runners are appreciable assets? I just looked up KBB on my 2000 Sport 5spd with 97k and it is now $9380 in good condition and $9930 in excellent condition. I bought it in December of 2009 with ~84k miles and the KBB at that time was somewhere around $8300 (I bought the truck for $8200).

Seanz0rz,

I've been looking for a 4.10 e-locker to swap into my truck for over a year now, you wouldn't happen to have a line on one would you? :) Thanks to Mike I have the modified housing in the garage, but have not been able to find a good 3rd member yet.

matt, i dont have a line on one, except the diff in my truck, but you cant have that one :hillbill:

i know the price is steep, but buying a new one from the dealer or a place like inchworm is a mighty nice prospect...

keep searching craigslist and places like pirate. they pop up fairly often...

:headscratch: $9500 seems really high but it must be location... KBB says $5400 for a 98 5spd with 160K miles (mine).

Throw an e locker in and the value will go up. I've gotten offers from 3 different guys on Expo for my 4runner. One guy wants to be the first one to know if I sell. I bought mine for $10K and I think if I held out I could get close to it.

thats crazy unless someone dosnt care what price they pay for that combo.

I don't think it's crazy at all. I haven't seen any SUVs I like since the 3rd gen. I would pay more.

KBB is a good general guide for values but there are always the exceptions. In fact, my last truck was a good example. The blue book on my '94 Xtra Cab SR5 V6 was somewhere around $5200 when I sold it in 2005. I couldn't find the for sale ad on this site, but here was the ad on supraforums (http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?297946-Immaculate-1994-Toyota-Xtra-Cab-SR5-V6-4WD-w-e-locker&s=5d72457881ca50b4240152bbeee8758c) and as you can see, it sold for $9,500 the first day on the market.

Thing lists for $10,750 in the 510/605/415..lol, mine lists for anywhere starting at $7000 to $9000 (only 135,000 on the clock), maybe I should sell now?

Now, realize in my experience KBB is factoring in market demand, which is subject to economic and other conditions. Guess what, if you want a Japan made Toyota right now is not a good time to go shopping to buy new, looked at the local lots lately and seen how little the supply is, look specifically for the nicer Lexus's, Land Cruisers, 4Runners, and som Scion models, my local two dealerships lots are over half empty right now..all b/c of the earthquake/tsunami damage affecting the production of them. Less supply, more demand, simple economics there. Charge more for mint condition used stuff.

O/T Ken, :D I remember you doing that, tell me you still have some pics sitting somewhere, if I hadn't been saving up for Wimpy I would've bought that thing in a second.

@Troy, drive into Nevada or Arizona and find a Cal-Emissioned or Federal-Emissioned one from some old couple that moved and drive it back, you'll save easily $2000. Gas would be like what, and you'd have the fun of driving it back and a reason to do a trip thread in here. :D

There are a surprising number of 5speed 4runners for sale in the Bay Area right now. It's not clear if any of these have a elocker or not.

*That ad for the 2000 did remind me though to reinstall my sub enclosure.

I have a lot of pics of that truck but none of them are online since off-road.com webhosting went offline with no notice. :( That was an amazing truck.

Similar to Mike's experience, I have quite a few offers to buy my 4Runner. People seem to comment on it at the gas station and ask how I like my "new" 4Runner. Heck, two weeks ago the alignment shop thought it was a 2007 and aligned it as if it were that year, requiring I take it back to have it re-done. The looks of the third gen are somewhat timeless. Too bad you can't get a 4th gen manual, I like that body style too.

Yeah, I was at a convention a couple weeks ago and gave some guys a ride to the Lego store. They were all surprised when I told them my 4runner was a 2000. They all thought it was new. :D

Ken, I agree. I really wish the 4th gens had a manual option. 5th gens too. :(

I find it hard to confuse a 3rd gen to a 4th gen, and that alignment shop must of had some screwed up equipment lol!

Thats a nice 4Runner, wish I had the cash to buy it.
I don't think it would be entirely to difficult to do a manual swap on a 4th gen.
Just need an FJ or Tacoma downer and some wiring skills.
