View Full Version : Removing Studs from Winter Tires

After running studded 265/70R16 and non-studded 235/85R16 winter tires I'm a firm believer that skinny tires (pizza cutters) are the way to go. Because of this, my set of 265 studs have been sitting idle in my shed for the last two years while I run my 235's all year long. I want to get my money's worth out of these tires by pulling out the studs. I tried slip jaw, needle nose and regular pliers and all I managed to do was snap off a couple of the stud tips.
Are there any tried and true methods to get them out?
I read on line today that it helps to spray the stud and stud pocket with some lubrication, but they didn't give a suggestion on what to use. Would soapy water do the trick?
Give me some suggestions!

Soapy water will be better than nothing, maybe try some silicone spray which is pretty thin and watery. Good luck on digging them out, I'm not sure they're made to come out at all - have you tried prying down the side and underneath the metal with a small pocket screwdriver?

I used a few cheap dikes (the tool ;) ) back in the day when I removed studs. It sucks and there's no way around it. Just grab the stud, clamp down and "roll" the dikes to pop the stud out.
Oh, and definitely wear gloves. Learned that the hard way.

I'll give the soapy water and dikes a try.

No it was "cheap dikes, pull, and wear gloves" for the win.
