well he's back ..
a while back , we did some front fenders for him .. and he loved them . We we're talking about My Trekker and the power of his 22re in his Truck ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/David.jpg
so .. 5VZ is now going in ..
Truck is not actually comming in for a couple of weeks , but I wanted to get going on the mods to the engine .
found a good used "kit" with 120 Kelometers on it
started with the clutch ..
NEW complete kit
OLD

so continued with the "prep" with Davids parts ..
because the 5VZ requires extra height , we "opt" for a hood scoop instead of a body lift . This is a http://www.toyotafiberglass.com exclusive part , and as well fits the 5vz supercharged "cut out " necessary to fit .
here's how we install it ..
First the scoop has the studs imbedded , so a template is necessary .. a sheet of "art" paper from your local office supply store will sufice ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1177.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1178.jpg
Be sure to mark it .. so you know which end is up
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1179.jpg
now with your "template" .. you can measure , and mark your install
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1180.jpg
there are a few different positions you can set this at , so .. this one is where we want it .. With that in mind .. time to drill
Take your time on this .. the metal hood skin is thin , and will dent really easily .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1181.jpg
depending on your location .. you will have to "open" up holes on the structural braces undernieth ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1182.jpg
and to open it up for a "functual vent" .. we suggest cutting between the supports .. will show this on a latter post .
install , and tighten bolts ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1183.jpg

Sweet swap, got a quick question, whats entailed with switching the crossover to the other side?
Just simply cut, reverse, and weld into place?

Yep although it looks like Corey used some pipe he bent himself. You just keep the flex tube where it is and reinstall the shields by bending the tabs back.
My question is home brewed 4cyl to 6cyl mounts or you going to use Chilkat (http://www.chilkatdesigns.com/) mounts?

If you have the OE crossover , you'll need to cut the pipes off and clean up all the flanges . I reused the factory flex pipe as well , It's just better quality then the aftermarket ones . as for the pipes ,I have done this a few times now , so this time I had an extra set made , and I plan on keeping a set in stock (for sale) all the time , + I have 2 more swaps booked in .
what I did , was to get everything set in place , and using a "wire" as a template , took it to the exhaust shop to have them bent up . both times they didnt want to do it , and I actually had to find another shop who was willing to help.took quite a few hours just to get the pipes done .

actually I used the factory 3.0L mounts , engine and frame

Trans-crossmember, IIRC/FWIW a 2wd3VZE version should fit, you have to turn it around though, same thing we did when I went from 3VZE-Auto2wd to Manual5speed. maybe I am mistaken?

08-26-2011, 08:59 PM
problem then becomes the 5v cat spacing/clearance .. need clearance .. it is not "recomended" to space the 02 sensors from the factory specs , so I dont .. easier for me to build a new crossmember, then to deal with problems down the road .
+ either way you "slice" it .. a "stock" crossmember will still have to be "notched" for clearance for the transfer case -- sits forward ~ 3 inches

so continuing on with the build .. got the battery trey done ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1215.jpg
I like to use the 84-88 rad overflow tank , as it's smaller and offers better room for the battery .
also , now have the Alt , starter ,Tranny and ADD wired ...

How far does that cross member hang down vs the stock cross member? Looks a little low in the test fit picture, just curious.

it "looks" low .. but it is not .. close pic maybe ? I didnt measure stock clearance , but i'm sure it's the same

Polite reminder, chuck the ringed fan before it decides to explode. ;)
*What gears and tire size there b/c I'd like to see a post swap mileage report for comparison's sake. I'm still pulling 15/17mpg on my 3vze, 3250rpm@70mph w/ 31's and 4.56's.

yeah !! it runs ....
had an issue with the starter "clicking" so I spent 2 days (long weekend) trying to figure out why ? ...
I assumed it was my wiring .. but as it turns out , and with MOST "clicking" starters .. yes you guessed it .. it was the contacts ... or so I thought !!
I replaced the contacts , and re-installed the starter ...
click click click .... crap !!!!
pulled it again , and bench tested .. starter NFG . Ended up buying a NEW starter .. and installed
4Runner fired right up , and puuurrrrrd like a kitten
I'll get a pic of the contact tomorrow .. crazy , I have NEVER seen one like it , it was actually bent , and broke the spacer plate undernieth as well
.
slacker
09-07-2011, 06:26 PM
so the contacts , or the 1 culprit anyway ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/david/SSPX1225.jpg
you can see it also ripped up the ground spacer
