Hey guys,

I have a bunch of GPS tracks I've been meaning to download off my GPS but I can't get Garmin's Mapsource to install on my new computer. It says I have to have a previous version.

I have it on my old box that's put away in storage. I thought I could connect my GPS to the new box and find a way to make it work, but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Erich

That's weird, what software version are you trying to install and what OS are you trying to install it on? What GPS is it for? What exactly is the problem and the error message.

I installed version 6.13.7 onto Windows 7 for my legend HCi without any problems.

Here's the stats:

OS: Windows 7
GPS: Garmin 60CSx
MapSource software version 6.16.3 from Garmin's website http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209
Error Message: "Previous Mapsource not found! Setup will terminate"

My only guess is that the previous versions have some sort of verification that I am a Garmin purchaser, but what if you buy a used one?

An easy thing to fix, just follow these instructions: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

And get nice free topo maps while you're there too: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/

It looks like that's only an update to currently installed software so I don't think there's any way around having to install the original software first.

The instructions are in the link I gave above:

The How-To

These steps must be completed in order for success.

Download and install Garmin BaseCamp
Download and install Garmin MapSource

They provide links and everything. This worked for me with my Oregon 300 (which didn't come with Mapsource).

I had to install their "training center" program before I could install mapsource.

Sorry, I meant Erich's link, not yours.

Worked like a charm, Thanks!

I'm downloading some topo maps right now.

GPS File Depot is a great site for Garmin-ites. The maps on there are excellent quality, and they usually have several choices for each state based on what you're looking for. I have a 1GB microSD in my Oregon (in addition to the 1GB on-board storage) and keep hi-res topos of SoCal (full Cal is too big), AZ, NM, and CO on it at all times  Each map is around 200-300MB I think.
