My dog has taken to peeing in our front yard, usually on the paved driveway and it's driving me nuts and it stinks! He usually poops in the back yard which is fine (although sometimes when it rains, he'll go on the driveway because he doesn't like to get his feet muddy).

He's not a puppy by any means, and with 2 kids and me working, there are lots of times that he's in the yard by himself, so it's impossible to catch him in the act all the time or watch him all the time. What also sucks is that we don't have a backdoor, so I can't just let him out into the backyard in the morning very easy. He's generally in the fenced front yard with the kids and has full reign of the whole yard when we are not home, which is how I want it, but I'd just prefer that he does his business in the back yard. I'm tired of him peeing by my firepit, kids toys, etc....

Any tips/tricks/sprays I can use? He doesn't seem to have a pattern either like he's marking certain spots, it just seems to be wherever he wants to....

One of my ideas, is to lock him in the backyard first thing in the morning until he does his business and then praise him. Only problem is that he usually pesters me to go outside in the morning, but he won't go out there until I fill his food bowl, and then he usually pees after he eats and I'm back inside. I guess I can put his collar on and leash him out to the backyard, but this doesn't address when we aren't home. :(

maybe try citronella oil. i know they dont like the smell of it, so circling the driveway in it might be enough to keep him where you want him.

try going to petco or petsmart, and asking one of them. after they give you advise, either buy what they are selling or find it on the internet cheaper/DIY.

Mark your territory in the front yard so he knows it's yours?

that might work, but April might hit you with the newspaper for it!

Lol. I'm with Steve. Fight fire with fire. If the dog steps it up with poop you'd better be prepared.

Cayenne pepper or citronella oil along the edges of the driveway. Should do the trick. If not, most tractor supply places sell something that would work.

Will that keep him off the driveway completely or just keep him from peeing there?

that should keep him off the driveway completely. i dont think you can have it both ways, him not peeing but being allowed on the driveway.

Yeah, it will keep him off completely, if you want him ON the driveway, but not peeing, thats just a matter of time and training, which I understand the difficulties of.
