WATSONVILLE, Calif. -- Investigators may have had a major break in a case to find catalytic converter thieves who ransacked Toyotas throughout Santa Cruz County [and the entire West Coast... Seattle down to San Diego] in recent months.

Two men were caught while attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a Toyota truck in a Watsonville parking garage just after midnight Wednesday, police Sgt. Burt Iles said.

The suspects, 29-year-old Seng Her and 27-year-old Thai Vue, both of Sacramento, were arrested in the parking garage at 310 Clifford Avenue, Iles said.

Watsonville police said they found sophisticated catalitic converter-stealing equipment in their white Honda, including shaved keys and mechanic's tools.

Iles said officers discovered that the Honda had been stolen just a few hours earlier.

"The Honda was registered in Watsonville and the owner was contacted. It was determined that the vehicle had been stolen from in front of his Watsonville address during the last few hours. He had been unaware that it had been stolen until contacted by the police," Iles said.

Three catalytic converters were also found on the Honda's backseat and the two Sacramento men were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail.

Investigators said it's too early to link the pair to the rash of thefts that happened throughout Santa Cruz County.

The Santa Cruz Police Department said Toyotas in the City of Santa Cruz have been stripped of many catalytic converters that it could not be the work of merely one crew.

"We are confident that multiple crews are responsible for the thefts over the last 6 months," SCPD Crime Analyst Zach Friend said.

"We are working closely with Watsonville to see if there are any connections to our cases. But we can safely say that even if there is a connection- it wouldn't be to all of our cases," Friend said.

It takes three minutes for the average thief to steal your car or truck's catalytic converter. And it costs as much as $1,000 to replace.

There are three types of metals that help the catalytic converter remove toxins from the vehicles’ emissions: platinum, palladium and rhodium. It’s the tiny amounts of these precious metals that makes converters valuable.

Thieves go prowling for easy steals, like raised sport utility vehicles. Toyota SUVs are favorites because their catalytic converters are only bolted on.

Watsonville police said alert neighbors who immediately called 911 were critical in nabbing the two men.

"This crime was interrupted and the case solved due to alert neighbors who called the police upon seeing suspicious activity and should be commended for their willingness to get involved," Iles said.

Anyone with more information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Watsonville Police Department Investigations Division at 831-768-3350 or the Crime Tip Line at 831-768- 3544.

I'm not sure how to go about this but if there is a way to post your "stolen cat" story here, I will collect your information, your story, and show up at the Santa Cruz Courthouse (as well as contact the detective in charge) and testify on your behalf (as well as mine) about your stolen cat.

Again.. i'm not sure if it will do any good... unless you got a good look at the perp... but the judge should hear our stories before he/she sentences these two yah-whoos! :flipoff:

In any case, this should be a

"call-to-action"

by the UltimateYota & Yotatech communities to get our stolen cat stories out there, so these two can be properly sentenced.

Milpitas: Police arrest 3 men found with catalytic converters, tools

Posted: 01/11/2012 09:32:49 AM PST

Three Stockton residents were arrested in Milpitas early Monday after police found them in possession of burglary tools and what appeared to be stolen catalytic converters, police said.

At about 3:30 a.m., officers noticed three men sitting inside a parked black two-door 1998 Honda Civic in the 1100 block of Shirley Drive.

The officers contacted the men and determined they were under the influence of a stimulant, police said.

The men were arrested, and officers found burglary tools and three catalytic converters inside the Honda, according to police.

The suspects were identified as Pete Somboune, 42, Oudone Douangmala, 32, and Peter Phabmixay, 55, according to police.

They were booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, possession of burglary tools and stolen property, conspiracy, and being under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.

Police determined that one of the catalytic converters had been taken from the vehicle of a Milpitas resident. The origin of the other two catalytic converters is unknown.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Milpitas police at (408) 586-2400 or an anonymous tip line at (408) 586-2500.

In the past two months months more than 2,500 converters have been stolen in California. Many/Most off Toyota trucks & SUVs. This problem will only go away when these crews are locked away.

The more we apply pressure to these crews, the more likely they'll give up their friends! Please help us by contacting the police so that they can better understand the extent of this crime.

In Texas we have alternet methods of appling pressure to thiefs..ie; Smith&Wesson or Glock methods are very effective..
