So you want to drive the Mojave Road?

Rate this Entry
The Mojave Road is probably the most popular expedition style off road attraction for most of California, Arizona, and Nevada.

To do it, you will need a few basic items:
A 4 wheel drive with 31" tires
This book by Dennis Casebier (no affiliation)
Enough water, food, and fuel for 3 days and 150-200 miles off road.

So far, I have led two full trips through the Mojave road, seeing various sites along the way.

Mojave Road 2012

In addition to these 3 day events, I have made other numerous day trips. The wonderful thing about the Mojave Preserve is that you are never very far from a paved cross road, so entering and leaving is relatively easy.

Don't mistake this for signs of a highly populated areas. Fuel is available in Barstow in the west, Fort Mojave to the east, and a few other places along the interstates that can become quite expensive. Some stretches of the Mojave Road can be passed without seeing a single other person even in the peak seasons.

While the vast majority of the road is not challenging, one of the most challenging aspects is packing light enough to be able to enjoy your vehicle, but packing enough to be comfortable. Bathrooms are nearly nonexistent, so you will have to find your own sanitation solutions. I highly recommend a pack in / pack out attitude.

The Mojave Road season is drawing to a close for the spring, but by October will be opening up again. So you want to drive the Mojave Road? It is pretty easy to do, but to make it great will require a bit of work in planning your route, deciding what to bring and what to leave behind, and deciding what you will have to skip seeing this time so you have an excuse to come back again!
