Got T-Boned Now i need A new rear axle among many repairs

It happened after a hollister run on the way home.

I was driving down first street in gilroy heading to my buddy's house to drop off a rc rock crawler I borrowed for the day. We were driving in the left lane going about 30mph of a 5 lane road with the middle being a emergency lane. Then a man in a sienna minivan gunned from a shopping center on our right across traffic and I swerved to try to minimize or dodge him but hit my smack in my passenger side slider and doors and I grinded across him and my truck popped off when he hit my rear axle and then my rear passenger tire blew out. I was now in oncoming traffic and I drove off the street into a Walgreens parking lot and once I checke to see if my wife and dog were okay I got out of tw truck and ran to the other car cause at first I thought he was fleeing. But upon further inspection he wasn't going anywhere. He car was totaled with car parts all over the 5 lane road with cars running over pieces here and there. The man was okay but shooken up. He was just in a rush when he tried to make that left hand turn and look where it got us. Several really nice people pulled over to help and check on us, they also called the cops and the officers that showed up were really nice.

We exchanged Info and I thought I would be able to drive home once I change my tire so I had at it and changed the tire on limited tools (wasn't planning on doing any tire Chanel's today) after I had the tire changed we drive the 2 blocks to my friends house and while we were going the truck was swerving like crazy, I thought it was just the alignment but when I got to my friends I realized my rear axle was bent, probably by about 10-15 degrees outward on the leading edge of the right side. So then I knew it had to be flatbed towed home. Called around and the quotes were $400-450 for a tow so we ended up with plan B. my friend let us drive his wife's 3rd gen home and he will gonna bring my runner home tomorrow with his f350 and trailer.


so far from further inspection the damages are: bent rear axle, damaged passenger doors, fiberglass fender, slider damaged, and frame slightly bent in from slider. blown tire and possible damages to hutchinson double bead lock.


i know ill need a new rear axle but i want to just put that money towards building a better axle, maybe goodtimes can chime in about his full float rear because I've been thinking about the possibility of doing that or maybe a currie or ruff stuff

Sucks man! Have you found out if the guy that hit you has insurance? I'm assuming he's at fault?

I talked to Lance about his axle plans at Pismo and they come out to the value of a built 3rd gen (low miles of course) so it's right down your alley.

Have you though about a Ruff Stuff or Diamond housing? I'm sure you can get one that will accept your diff and brakes. Good thing you have going is that you've got disks already (opposed to a 3rd gen). Most of the work will be placing tabs and sticking it all together.

How is the frame where the slider is attached? Is it still somewhat square? Screw replacing the doors and just boat side the thing.

Glad to hear you, the wife and little pup are ok. Glad to hear you were in a built up 4th gen too. That impact would have crumpled most anything else.

So the scab plates pushed in the frame? I'm not a frame expert but other than ultimate strength is that a deal changer? Are the body mounts still square?

yeah he has insurance and so far they have been on top of it and are accepting full responsibility for all damages. yeah i remember talking to him too but i kinda forget the details. yeah i like the ruff stuff options the best. i loved the trussed axles but i guess i just have to figure out what rear end to go with. i mean of course i can stick with my 8' and go from there but im trying to weigh my options. i know of diamond but ive just heard a few things about timelines and not to keen on the looks of the axles.

so the frame is still straight but the scab plates kinda bent into the frame at 2 spots and the other two support peeled at the welds. but the frame is boxed so its still straight. i was thinking once i grind off the old sliders i could plate the whole side of the frame to strengthen it more. the body mounts are still perfectly fine too. oh i definately will have all the body work done to get it back to pre accident condition, this is my baby and i still want it pretty.

sucks about the truck as it is probably the nicest built up 4th gens i've seen in person. but as mike said, glad no one was hurt. hang in there, i'm sure we'll see updates soon!

Imagine the force it took to bend the rock sliders and imagine what it would have done to the sheetmetal had they not been there. Glad everyone is okay, that was one heck of an impact.

What did the Sienna look like afterwards. I assume it was not happy but I wonder how well those fair as we will out grow our family car one day.

it was totalled with parts all across the road but the passenger cabin was fine and the driver was fine

Oooouuch!!! That so sucks... I don't know what else to say except I'm glad you and the wife are okay. :(

Damn that must have been quite an impact... Like Mike said, just be glad you were in a built up truck, stock truck would have taken it a LOT worse. Glad you all are ok, and look forward to the restoration/build :thumbup:

Being that every one is okay.... Congrats! You will rake in the cash on this one. And the almighty DIY will take you places. Haha.

Seriously though, I am glad you guys are okay. Its going to be a BS headache rebuilding, but in the end good will have come from it.

Thanks guys! The truck is all done and back on the road (I should really bring my build thread over here) I just got my skids plates back on last night and the only open project I have left to do is to install new air bump stops which I plan on tackling this coming week

Yeah, bring it over here. Along with the trailer build.
