    http://www.undergroundexplorers.com/safety2.htm covers the basics. We use the petzel stop since it will slow a unconscious decent down. That way a rock to the head dosnt mean a express ride down the rope.

    when you guys go down a mine, is there someone who stays with the vehicles up top if something goes wrong? also, were there any animals, bats, insects, snakes, etc down there?

    We use a spot to tell others when we are in and out for the day. If we don't come out then other explorers are called before any county mine rescue team.
    Normally we do find lots of animals that have fallen in but this mine had more horizontal entrences then vertical so there wasn't much. Also there were not many bats possibly because it was a very cold mine
