    Rivian R1T Electric Truck

    750 hp
    4WD
    400 miles of range
$69k before rebates (which are around $10k in some states). $59k is actually comparable to the price of a lot of new trucks today, believe it or not.

Crazy times; even if this one never makes it to market, others will eventually.

    I'd be interested in this:

I'm thinking of the offroading possibilities with 4 individual electric motors. It has the potential to be better than dual-lockers, with the ability to monitor motor speed and put the power where it needs to go. And essentially limitless low gearing. And 4wheeling in silence.

I’m going to the LA Auto Show on Tuesday and this is one of the main things I want to see.
400 miles would easily get me from home in Orange County to Mammoth Mountain or Vegas, or from the Avi Casino to home via the Mojave Road.
The 4 computer-controlled motors would make it the king of traction. But I wonder if the “skateboard” underneath would be as stout as a normal truck frame to mount protection, winches, etc. I’ll have to ask when I get to the show!

I'd be interested in how much of the 400mi claim is real. Looks like a great truck from their video and photo promotions so it'll be interesting to see this reshapes electric truck concepts by more of the mainstream manufacturers. Does Rivian have a shot at surviving this fierce market like how Tesla has somehow managed to break into the auto industry or will they fall the way side like how Faraday is headed.

Time will tell but the good thing is long term we all benefit from all of these innovative concepts coming out in full force.

I finally got to the LA Auto Show yesterday and spent a good chunk of time at their booth. This truck is the real deal. So many vehicles nowadays are marketed towards the off-road and adventure-seeker set, but I feel like these guys have spent the last 9 years actually going for it.
One of the head engineers was there giving their presentation and was open to lots of questions... and I asked!
We’ve discussed the 500 mile range on the top of the line battery, but the base (or mid; it wasn’t clear) configuration still provides 300 miles of range, which is better than anything else out there.
The exciting part is its capabilities. Again, we know about the 4 independent motors, which is going to be great for traction, but the truck also comes with an air suspension that will raise it to a true 14”, as there’s no pumpkin or anything hanging from it’s flat underside. Speaking of the underside, it’s 1/4” aluminum which could be decent for protection and when I asked that engineer if sliders could be welded on, he just smiled and nodded. Then I asked about a winch and was told they “could neither confirm nor deny” that they were working on an accessory winch for the front. Not bad!
Other off-road niceties... good approach angle, and a curved rear end to improve departure angle, on board air (which the engineer mentioned numerous times was specifically there for airing up tires, not air mattresses or beach balls), 110v plug (and, being an electric vehicle, it’s gotta be more than just 400w) in the bed, along with multiple “connected” cable locks so you can lock stuff up and use your phone to know it’s still safe.
The full-size spare A/T tire is under the bed floor, like the Ridgeline, which would mean removing all your stuff from the bed to change your tire, but might also increase clearance underneath.
The tailgate is pretty rad, too. It opens 90 degrees like any other, but then also drops down a full 180 to make bed access even easier. AND, it has built-in steps to get into the bed. Speaking of steps, that pass-through that’ll hold a snowboard in front of the bed... the doors can support your weight, so you can get to the roof rack.
Overall, I’m extremely impressed. Only issue is that this is less a Colorado/Ranger/Tacoma competitor than Range Rover. It’s pricey.
