Looks like I need to get a ham. Looking at a hAnd held till I find more friends willing to switch or I do more trips with you guys. I hard find local people to go do what you guys do. Thanks for the invite and I'll be ready for your next adventure.

Toyotech, the Baofung (sp?) is a great intro unit to HAM. That's all I run at the moment, hooked up to a cheap magnetic rooftop antenna and a plug-in handheld mic. Works great for wheeling with a group. You're not going to bounce signals off the atmosphere to reach Thailand, but the trucks around you will hear you just as well as with an expensive in-dash unit.
Before you order, you might want to check out their other radios.

The 82 might be a better option. I haven't looked into it much, but I hear it is a much better radio.
50 isn't bad for a better radio.

Well I was ready to order this but now you out a few more to pick from. All they all the same and which one should I go with? I was gonna do a two pack just because prices goes up over the year and I want a spare. I hate to keep buying different models and really just want a good one for trips like yours where I need ham.

Looks like the 82 and 82l are the same? If so I think I may do the 82l

Getting 2, especially for the price is a good idea. Having 2 of the same radios is nice as far as programming and use. The Boafengs can also be set up to work as a mini repeater which could be helpful for places like camp. On night 2 we camped in a mini canyon. The below setup could be placed a short walk from camp and increase the signal in and out.

Equally important is getting your radio license which is pretty easy and informative.
82l comes with the mic you will never use (most likely) so I'd go 82.
I will probably buy another 5r simply because I already have one. This way I can share batteries and chargers.
