    CV's, wheel bearing, or other?

    So here goes. Recently noticed my CV clamps on the driver side leaking grease. Not a ton but, some. Decided to pull and rebuild the OEM rather than throw on my Napa that's been laying around as a trail spare.

    Everything went very smoothly, no issues until I went to test drive it around the block. Made it a couple of minutes away when all of a sudden heard/felt a pop and grind sound for about 5-10 seconds (basically until I came to a stop.) Actually sounded like something dragging more than anything. Looked at everything, nothing looked/smelled out of my the ordinary.

    Made it back home with no repeat of sound, decided to investigate further and pulled the CV again. Even decided to swap for the NAPA that was still new sealed in box. Tightened everything down after the swap and went to test it out. Same result, a few miles down the road with no issue and out of nowhere a pop/grid sound, stopped and checked before heading home.

    I am at a loss as to what the issue is. No noticeable play in the wheel bearing. All ball joints and tie Rod's are new. The CV was fully seated with the snap ring popping into place during the swap. I just recently did the passenger CV about a month ago with zero issues. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

    Could it be the ABS acting up?

    That's an interesting thought. Could that happen even when the brakes weren't applied? And if so, what's the best way to reset/fix that?

    Also, I did finally lift up the front end and spin both sides with no resistance or noise. Both sides spun evenly and freely while in the air. Still am waiting until after my trip to put the whole thing on a lift and try again in 4wd to see if I can replicate it where I can see what's going on.

    Maybe pull the diff oil plug and see if there are any metal chunks.

    Do that for the t case too just to make sure. I'll have to think about it more.

    ABS is unlikely to activate without the pedal pressed, unless something is REALLY wrong with the wiring for the brakes, etc.

    BTW, Happy Christmas!! (if that's your sort of thing)

    Thanks for the advice, I'll dig back into it in a few days when I get back. I do think it might be from the diff. Just a hunch, no support other than its the only big ticket item in the Front end I haven't really inspected yet.

    Anyways, thanks again for the advice everyone. I'll check it out when I can. In the mean time, hope everyone is having a merry Christmas or whatever their persuasion of holiday cheer they celebrate.

    I really hope you don't have a problem with a bearing inside the diff man. Although I would have thought that it would have caused a leak due to bearing play?
