    High mileage 3rd gens

I've been searching for another 4Runner for a while now (for my sister), and I keep coming across these super high mileage 3rd gens that still look good inside and out.

This one has 422,000 miles: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/5622334287.html

I would say these things have to be one of the best built vehicles ever made. Not only do the powertrains hold up, the rest of the vehicle seems to do pretty well too. #rosyfeelinginside

My friend's mom has a pristine 3rd gen with less than 100k miles on it. Too bad it's 2wd.

Wow, I didn't realize how rare these trucks were getting. The last few times I looked on Craigslist I was able to find several 5spd 3rd gens, but pickings are slim at the moment. There are a couple, but they have 200k+ miles.

    Autotrader is similar.

    Would she take a 4cyl?

Manuals are getting really hard to find in good condition...a friend of mine has missed out on several as they have sold before he can get to them.

I think V6 is a requirement too since they may want to tow a small RV. That place in Glendale does occasionally have manuals in stock...they seem to buy every one they can find.

    Guys,

On these high mileage sticks, make sure you check the following w/ a test drive:

    - condition of clutch pedal where the return spring interfaces with it. As you know, that clutch plastic bushing is often destroyed through use and then the spring digs a nice groove into the U-channel

    - listen for crickets. when i heard that cricket sound at idle, the pilot bearing wore out after 6 months and then shortly after seized making shifting into 2nd a major pain in the ass. i think i wrote about it several years ago.

And I'll say it again: Redline MT-90 is absolutely the best trans fluid for this vehicle. Don't put Amsoil in there, less viscous is not good for our vehicles.
