    I agree with Paul. Unless you're going to be doing expeditions in the snow, a 4 season tent really isn't necessary. 3 season tents are just as capable in the snow. Just not blizzard kind of weather. Besides, they're a lot cheaper. "Cheaper" being a relative term. If you're okay with a 3-man tent, I'd like to suggest MSR Mutha Hubba tent. It gotten great reviews. On occasion, you can find it on sale for around $300.

    Light weight is key with an actual backpacking tent. A decent 3 season (such as North Face brand) and a good sleeping bag (0-20 degree) will be enough to keep most people in good condition. My dad and I go camping 1-2 times a year in West Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado.

    A four season tent means nothing if you don't have the other gear to go with it (a good backpack, shoes, clothing, sleeping bag, etc.)
