A good 30-06

Hunting season isn't too far away, and I'm in need of a good rifle.

I've really enjoyed the 30-06's, great round, and would take care of anything I want to hunt around here. I just need a good rifle to look for.

Bolt action, no need for follow up shots (that quick at least). Also, I've got a bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40 right now, but not sure if I'm going to want a bit more reach with my glass.

HOWA 1500

~$350 and as accurate as they come w/o going custom and big $$$$$$.

it's the original design for the Weatherby Vanguard action. Howa made all the Vanguards back in the 80's and 90's. pick one up and cycle the action on one of these and a savage and you'll find a very noticeable difference.

i have one in 270WIN and i have put 3-shots touching on several occasions and it will average ~3/8" groups all day at 100-yards with box ammo.

I would recommend that you look into the Savage rifles...from what I am hearing, they have totally revamped their trigger assembly comparable to that of custom made rifles that cost 2-4x more. This came from a couple of gunsmiths that make custom guns... I currently have a Weatherby Ultralightweight in a 7mm Rem mag caliber that I pack into the mountains for elk. I justified the price by getting only one gun in my hunting battery (I will buy a bigger caliber for Africa if and when I go...). I would say pinch pennys on the gun and buy the best glass that you can afford...It seems that every year, elk and venison goes up per pound...at least it does at my house .

why 30 06 why not 308 WIN...... both rounds are similar but I like the ballistics better in the 308........

I've got a winchester model 70 featherweight in 30-06. It's nice and light and easy to carry around but it kicks like a mule. And because of it's light weight barrel it's not as consistent from shot to shot, but it'll put a bullet in the kill zone well enough. The best group I ever got from hand loads was about 1" at 100 yards.

Howa or Savage, savage personally makes the most accurate cheapest rifle out of box I ever seen. I bought a used older model years ago and have taken so many deer I lost track.

My brothers, fathers rugers and my grandfathers mausers cannot compare to its accuracy and this sucker was dirt cheap. I been saving up for the 114 euro with the iron sights as my next one,I have a heavy barrel 110fp now.

Depends on gun, shooter, powder charge, etc. Perhaps the slight less kick you get outta .308 and the weight of the bullet helps you. Me, I can take any gun and consistently group well if the gun is capable of it.

If you can find a decent Springfield 1903 that is a great, tried and true rifle. We have a sporterized model in 30-06 and it is one of the best shooting bolt actions I have shot. I can group pretty well with it at 100 yards through Lyman peep sights.. Never used a scope on it.. That's what our custom 22-250 with the 1000 yard Unertl scope is for
