dont worry about burn dodge on a photo
main principles are exposure, depth of field, composition (placement of scene in your suggest plane of picture surface), lighting and other stuff.
what camera do you use? can you change your white balance, metering, can you work with the aperture and shutterspeed at all?
the smaller the aperture the wider the depth of field aka if the aperture is shut to like an F29 or F22 then your depth of field is huge.
however if the lens is wide open such as F1.2 or F2.8 then the depth of field is extremely narrow.
