Demounting Tires

Got a set of 5 Land Cruiser rims in good shape for $50, unfortunately the tires are still on them and all my local tire shops want $25 each to remove them.

How easy is it to do this myself?
What tools do I need?

I'd like to do it right and give the tires to someone who can use them.

should only cost 12-20 bucks for the entire set to remove the tires.

Do you plan to put new tires on these wheels? If so you might ask a different tire shop to remove the old one for ya. For most shops if you buy new tires they'll dismount/mount tires for free so that's a great option.

Otherwise the other way is to just pop the bead by using a hi-lift and then lots of soapy water to remove the tire. it's a pita though so good luck!

yeah, $5 per wheel is more like it, that's what I paid at a local firestone couple years back.

Your getting raped at that price. It would be cheaper to drive to my local Napa and get it done for $5 + $2 for disposal.

To do it properly you need some special tools. With out them you may damage the tire and the wheel. I've tried the old hi-lift and tire spoon thing and it got me no where. The tires were going to the dump so I took the sawzall to them. It was fun for me but not for my girlfriend. I had her holding the wheel

if your going to buy new tires or have newer tires put on the lc wheels just have who ever mounts and balances the new tires take the old ones off. it will all be included in the price of mounting and balancing. removing the tires yourself with no tire machine is a waste of time and will aggrivate you to the point where you wish you had just spent the money. $25 per wheel for dismount only is bs

Thanks for all the input. I thought $25 seemed high. I called around to Firestone, Big O, and Wheel Works, they all said $25.
SF Bay area is expensive, mechanics run $120 an hour in Oakland.

I was planning on swapping my current tires onto these, but I think I may just wait 'til I buy new ones.

Just found a local tire shop that'll do it for $7.50 a tire. I'd always rather support local business anyway.

just seems ridiculous.
