Thread: The Blade/Knife Thread.

    Re: The Blade/Knife Thread.

Took a couple of pics. The wife and baby went to sleep early so I've been messing around all night. These live in the little coin basket by the bed. It makes it easy to grab one on my way out the door. I've got one of these (not the SRK) with me every single day (except airport days > checked luggage).

    From left to right:
Spyderco Military, Spyderco Para Military (black), Spyderco Endura, Spyderco Delica, Spyderco Rescue, CRKT K.I.S.S., Cold Steel SRK.

Military. Favorite one but a little big for regular pant IWB, EDC.

Better for when I need a nice EDC.

I've had this Endura for 11 years. It's an oldy and a goodie. I'm not sure the blades are made in Japan any more.

Delica is when I want something there and small. Makes for a good toothpick.

This thing will cut you if you pick it up. It's for when you really need a knife in a hurry. I used to have a green handle one (longer blade) that was attached to my PFD. It was used once and only once. This knife isn't for carving on wood or cutting cheese this had a purpose and I wanted it there and sharp when need be. Now I can't find that PFD or green handled knife. This one has only cut paper. It used to live in my crash bag but now it's got bedside duty.

Dumb little knife I haven't opened in 3-4 years.

Thick and ready for work. Made in the USA too (new ones aren't).

I've got a hand full of swiss army knives here and there as well as 4 leathermans. I've always got one in my bag, vehicle and the others are with camping and fishing stuff.

Thought you guys might like this review, it shows the action on mine.

*No that's not me in the vid, but it's related to the whole left handed option.
**What the reviewer doesn't mention is he has the right handed version, even with the clip switched the sawtooth cut ids right handed.
The true left handed version has the proper tooth cut in them so you can slice/peel and get the proper roll-off instead of curling in.

    Re: The Blade/Knife Thread.

I can't hold out on this thread any longer! My favorite knives (Top to bottom obviously):

BK&T Combat Utility - Huge survival knife, 7" blade, full tang with hammer flat on handle. I always have this thing on me when camping/hiking. I'm a wilderness survival enthusiast and this is the one knife I would want with me in a survival situation, hands down. Make it a spear, hatchet, hammer, it does a lot and is a very tough blade that holds a good edge.

Carson Design CRKT M16-14 - Large folding knife, 4" blade, heavy duty feel. Double lock on the blade to prevent accidental folding. I'm a fan of the tanto blade as well.

Carson Design CRKT M16-02Z - Good little pocket knife, 3" blade, thick tough blade, double locking blade like its bigger brother.

Kershaw 1570 S60V - Very nice knife, although the grip is a little strange in tactile feel but good for slippery hands. Spring loaded blade allows it to open in an instant with a flick of your thumb. Amazingly sharp blade, nearly razor sharp.

Thought I'd bump this thread. I found out about these from of all people, Tony Pereira of Pereira Cycles..apparently they're in the Sierra Foothills (503 area code)..a little "RedNeck" but definitely will pass the semi-stealth carry requirements I look for: http://bucklehead.com/

H&K Snody Auto Axis to Assist Mod if you're in one of "Those 45 States or Non-Military/Non-Public Safety"..

*What a waste of a good functioning knife, but I can't legaly sell it, let alone ship it, and it would have to sit there as I can legally possess it but not use it.

Had some time today to finally figure out what was stuck in my mechanism on the H&K Knife, so at the same time I went ahead and converted it over to non-auto, rendering it fully legal in California as a EDC w/o CCW. *Pretty much can forget my warranty, but in all the Benchmade's I have owned I had yet to need it before losing or giving the knife away anyhow.

You remove the 4 t-6 torx and the t(20?) main screws, remove the trim plate, open the knife, and on the blade armature (bolt assembly) remove the shim holding one of the assist springs. Remove the spring then just put the shim back in, close the knife, and reassemble. Before you put the last screw in the blade bolt assembly, add some blue loctite.

Tighten the t(20?) until the point when you open the release, it no longer lets the knife fully deploy. Simply do as you do with the finger assist, flicking your thumb along the blade and it's opened.

Not as fast, but according to Cali law, it has a lock, a release, and is no longer biased when released towards full open. Next mod might be just figuring out how stupid it would be to tap the blade for a thumb bolt install and no springs at all.

    Happy cutting boys!

*Proposed Senate bill differentiating Switchblades from a "Spring Assist Knife".

CALIFORNIA is the basis of all law due to it being typically the hardest and most progressive
California State Senator Betty Karnette of the 27th District is the author and who is responsible for Bill SB 274 and the legalization of Spring Assist Knives.

Senator Karnette realized that Spring Assist Knives are extremely functional tools by law-abiding citizens and that these knives serve an important utility to many knife users, as well as firefighters, EMT personnel, hunters, fishermen, and others who utilize one-handed opening knives, then the prohibition of such items is obstruction to justice & complete disregard to US law.

Spring Assist Knives are intended to save lives while an EMT, Firefighter, or Law Enforcement Officer is trying to get you out of an automobile accident or any other viable problem. They have saved skydivers lives that had to cut parachute lines. They have saved countless fishing poles when a line is needed to be cut. They are also essential to handicap individuals whom happen to have one arm. Special Thanks to Senator Betty Karnette is in order because if it were not for her we would loose more of our rights in this country and also not have tools that are lifesaving instruments.

LEGAL LAWS & STATE STATUTES OF CALIFORNIA

The rules on "what is a legal pocketknife versus a switchblade" are contained in Penal Code 653k. In it's entirety (current effective 1/1/2002):

653k: Every person who possesses in the passenger's or driver's area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the public, carries upon his or her person, and every person who sells, offers for sale, exposes for sale, loans, transfers, or gives to any other person a switchblade knife having a blade two or more inches in length is guilty of a misdemeanor.

For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever. "Switchblade knife" does not include a knife that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that biases the blade back toward its closed position.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bill SB 274, clarifies the definition of a one-hand opening knife so they are not wrongly classified as switchblades. Bill SB 274 clearly states: For the purposes of this section, switchblade knife means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similar type knife, which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever. Definition of Switchblade knife does not include a knife that is designed to open with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife utilizes a detent or other mechanism that (a) provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or (b) biases the blade back toward its closed position. In order to ensure that only legitimate one-handed opening knives are covered, SB 274 narrows the language to only allow knives to fall under the exemption from the switchblade law if that one-handed opening knife contains a detent or similar mechanism. Such mechanisms ensure there is a measure of resistance that prevents the knife from being easily opened with a flick of the wrist. Moreover, a detent or other mechanism is prudent and a matter of public safety as it will ensure that a blade will not inadvertently come open.

    Re: The Blade/Knife Thread.

Really? What an incredible waste of time it was to draft that bill. Is it even legal to restrict what kind of knife a person can carry? Making it illegal to carry a 'switchblade' will I'm sure make criminals less likely to use them or at least substitute a legal knife to be used when knifing someone. It just wouldn't be right to kill someone with an illegal weapon.
