Thread: fuel can recommendations

    fuel can recommendations

time to buy a few metal fuel cans. looking for 5 gallon / 20 litre cans, prefferably metal. just wondering what you would recommend. im in california, so all the good non carb cans cannot be sold here. instead we must have special nozzles that leak, even though they are not suppose to!

obviously cost is a factor, but i am really looking for the easiest to fuel, least likely to leak when fueling or stored. also durability and quality is a concern, as i want them to really last a long time.

so what do you guys use? thanks!

The weldco (sp) metal ones ar enice, but the new spouts suck.

FWIW I have some MFC scepter plastic USGI cans, these suckers are SOOOO worth it, need a special nozzle that cost 18 bucks back when but they cannot be busted. However very hard to find these and the nozzles are even worse. I tried online awhile back and found NADA for nozzles and few cans, think the war and the carb bs killed them. Im glad i got 5 spouts way back.

You can just get a super siphon, HF has a variant also. I picked up a couple metal cans from Habitat for Humanity last week in Oregon for $3 a piece. They were old and full of rust though...so i'll have to strip the inside. I'd just pick some up from expedition exchange and a super siphon and call it a day.

dont strip your can inside, you can buy this stuff (i forget the exact name) that will coat it and it will be good.

    sean,

you can find 6.5 gal. plastic gas can at West Marine. it's the middle one in this picture. it costs about $25 and you will need to buy a brass fitting to plug off the gas outlet valve($2)

it worked great on my long haul from cali to indiana. since you have roof rack like i do, just use one tie-down will hold it securely on to the basket.

#1. never keep portable gas container inside. you have two options, bumper or roof. best bet is roof.
#2. it sits flat in the basket, it will never fall, no mounting plate needed. it's plastic, doesn't make squeaky noise. it has lower profile than the jerry can, so better gas mileage for you.
#3. DOT approved. it has a built-in bleed valve.
#4. when you need to fill tank from the can, just use a 5 feet piece of vinyl tube, costs about $0.75.
#5. it holds 1.5 gal. of extra fuel than a regular jerry can.

The ones scuba linked are what I have and they are impossible to harm. But if you read the very bottom of the page: they say they dont sell them anymore.

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/ wont find them much cheaper unless you find used of a deal.

If you want the scepter kind, gotta get them from canada-stupid carb bull makes them illegal here apparently dstactical.com

I've heard of something also, something for the inside of motorcycle gas tanks? I may just throw some bolts inside mine to try to knock as much rust off as possible, but I heard the sealing solution isn't cheap either.
