Thread: Boo, no wheeling in the South...

Re: Boo, no wheeling in the South...

I've been to Harlan, it IS a nice place. Plenty for everyone (and a LOT for those among us just looking for dirt roads) but it took me FOREVER to get there pulling my trailer through the Ky mtns. I don't envy that trip again.

I think a trip out to the outer banks would be awesome, but that is pretty far for the alabama and georgia folks. However, It would be within driving distance for the folks up in PA and VA. It would be like a smaller east coast version of Pismo.

It's a bummer tellico is closed.

Outer Banks are a string of islands that run down the coast of North Carolina. At the northern end by the VA border, the islands are accessable by a long bridge. IIRC, it takes about 6-8 hours to drive the length if you stop alot. Once at the southern most point, an auto ferry can be used to cross the Pamlico Sound and dock somewhere around Swan Quarter or Cedar Island. Ferry takes several hours. Parts of the islands are not much wider than the road, with the Sound on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Our family did this for a vacation back about 10 years ago. It's a fun trip.

There are several places that allow vehicles out on the beach. I beleive Nags Head on the norther section allows ORV on the dunes. I've never been out there though, but once I get a newer vehicle with 4wd, I'll probably make a trip out there.

Some of the folks on ih8mud have done some trips out there, and supposedly, there are camp spots only accessable during low tide.

yeah...not sure how much wheeling there would be, but it's fun if you like the ocean and like to drive. Good family outing. The ferry is fun too.

Well, we would need to make sure we aren't still there at high tide. Sounds like you would have to move camp a lot to keep up with the tides.

and.... for what its worth along the lines of an east coast jambo, until we here at UY garner enough southeasterners to make it worthwhile (HINT: Invite your friends) there is the southeast 4runner jamboree every year, Dan, I know you've been. It's hosted by Brian from WabFab Offroad.

From what I gather, the camp sites are higher up and don't get effected by the high tide. It's just the "road" to the sites that gets covered by high tide. I'll have to see if I can find that thread on mud....it was kinda interesting.

SE4RJ is a good event, with some great people. Wish I could make it more often.
