Bit the DSLR bullet - Nikon D3000 with Lens Kit

    I just bit the bullet - a freaking 50BMG - and bought a Nikon D3000 with a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lenses.

I've been having some fun with it and playing around w/ the JPEGs in Photoshop. I've just started messing around w/ the RAW files to see what all the hype is about.

The difference in quality and clarity between this thing and my 10MP point and shoot is phenomenal.

Those were right after I got it home last Friday. I'll post some more pics shortly...

Nice! Once you go SLR you can't go back- point and shoot picture quality is crap in anything but direct sunlight!

Point and shoots still have their place but I wouldn't buy one with more than 6 or 7 MP. I'm really happy with my Nikon DSLR and am still learning things on it even though I've had it for over 4 years now.

I got the package (both lenses are Nikon Nikor AF-S DX VR series glass) at Best Buy. I got the guy to match their "online only" package price, @ $699 for the camera and lenses, then I got him to throw in a $83 backpack/sling bag, toss in a $44 4GB/15MBS card, and a $13 UV filter, all for the same $699 price, plus tax, then I had a $50 gift card leftover from Christmas.... I seriously think he had math issues. They had the same camera/lens package and a cheap bag on the counter for $849 as a "package deal".

    a couple more...

Very cool. I need a camera that does good night shots. My Canon SD450 just doesn't do very well in low light.

What does the $13 UV filter do?

I'm thinking about getting a DSLR, and I'll have to put the D3000 on my list of cameras to consider.

the UV filter protects the lense and the sensors from UV light... uv can damage the sensor (i never take the uv filter off my Minolta unless im using a different filter, such as my polarizer)

@Bamachem - i realize you just got the camera and probably are down on the toy budget because of it... but kit lenses suck, very very few exceptions. get some nice Nikkor lenses and you will be even more impressed with your camera's capabilities when you are paying as much (or more) for a lens as you did your entire package, you can imagine the increase in quality of the glass.
