Ipad

A guy at work likes to buy all the latest Apple toys. He got the 16gb version iPad (they have 16, 32 & 64). I think its a glorified version of the iPod touch. I wasn't too impressed with it. I thought it would be lighter. I'm not a mac person, but I do like their stability compared to windows.

- Not too many apps out for it, yet.
- only has wifi (no 3G)
- No usb ports
- looks and functions like a magnified iPod touch, with few additional features.
- Wasn't impressed with the keyboard its wide enough but can't put all your fingers on the keypad to type fast (good for those that like to type with two fingers).
- may come in handy for navigation someday with 3G (next gen).

Your thoughts?

Re: Ipad

i own an iphone, and i generally like it (alot about it drives me nuts, but for the most part, it does what i want it to do OK)

i dont get the ipad? its an answer to a question nobody asked. its a product for a market that doesnt exist. it does slightly more than my iphone, but not nearly what a netbook or full notebook computer will do. and yet, at its cheapest, its several times the price of a netbook, at its most expensive, its the price of a lower end notebook.

maybe im not the target audience (middle class 23 year old techie who enjoys electronics, then who is their target audience?) but i just dont understand it. the price is WAY too high, it doesnt do anything id want it to do for the price, the form factor is all wrong (too small to be functional, too big to be portable) and to top it all off, its locked down with apple, so you cant customize it, or really do anything with it that apple doesnt expressly want you to.

i will never buy one, i will never put it on a wish list. for me, i have a phone that does alot. the rest of what i need is covered well by a mid range laptop. i dont need something to bridge the gap, because there isnt one. i use my phone for internet and email mostly, rarely make a call or even send a text message. the laptop i use for school work, design, and web browsing. then i have a desktop for games and intensive design, plus alot of surfing UY and theSamba. why would i shell out 600 bucks for something that does stuff all my other somethings already do.

@sean - I agree. I think its less geared towards techies and more toward elderly "kindle" and large button remote crowd.

@mastacox - Does hp slate run on a mobile version of window 7?

Re: Ipad

the slate runs the win 7 basic version. so its still windows 7, but no fancy graphics and such (not needed) i run 7 on my desktop and have since early october. i absolutely love it, and would welcome it on a mobile device such as the slate!

if that is their target audience, it's still a bit expensive to me. i just really dont see the point. sadly, it wont fail or flop on apple, and other companies will be forced to push crap knockoffs down our throats.

Re: Ipad

Could the ipad or the slate run any kind of navigation software? It would be nice to have something of that size with a touch screen to mount on the dash.

Re: Ipad

slate for sure will run iguidance (my fav when i had a carpc) and all the navigation programs available to windows.

the ipad, whatever apple wants to sell in the app store. ive never been happy with the iphone gidance softwares, and you must be connected to a 3g network to use them (usually when i need GPS on my phone, its because im in the middle of NOwhere)

Re: Ipad

for me, I just can't justify anything Apple makes. not even Ipod. I don't see anything has to be done on a Mac which pc can't do.

my Dell XPS 600 is 4 years old still running strong. I bought it used for $700. it only crashed once due to a hard drive failure. it's always running, only has been turned off less than totally 7 days since I bought it.

Re: Ipad

I think the iPad is overpriced, but would be a great fit for people wanting a tablet style device to watch movies and TV shows on the go... especially if Apple can offer good prices per episode on iTunes.

Here's an iPad mounted in a 05+ Tacoma:
