Speaking of drill press. Chris I saw you mention that a few posts up. How would that cutting be achieved using a drill press? Most that have tapered chucks don't like, won't do or spit the chuck when you run a side load on them. Are guys having good results using a drill press? Are the tolerances there?
After reading what has to be done it appears it wouldn't be too bad but if you have a mill it's the way to go. Even with a drill press you'd need or want a milling vise with some sort of advance.

I am lucky that I have access to a mill. He has very limited parts for it though, so I end up paying a lot for all the tooling and stuff. The 18mm ball end mill bit I bought cost more than all the reamers, bits, dykem, and files that I bought for this. They do have cheaper ones on ebay and amazon, but they come from china and the shipping times were sketchy at best. The cost though will be spread out over two frames (more probably, since I am pretty sure my Dad wants to do one now). I already have probably $275 in bits, files, dykem, and the jig at this point. Still need to get lapping compound, cerakote, and maybe some 1911 specific tools like the plunger tube staking tool.

Got tired of just filing and fitting parts, so I put it all together just to see it all. The plunger tube and extractor, are not installed, I want to wait until I get my lapping compound and get that done first. Might as well wait since lapping will make a mess. Everything else is easy to remove for lapping.
A pic before I tear it all down and continue to fine tune it. The thumb safety is first on my list. As you can see it won't go all the way up. Needs more filing

Hey guys, long time no talk. I haven't much time for off-roading lately so no pics to post in that area, but I can post here! My birthday was last Saturday, and my wife reminded me why I married her: she got me a gun! Not just any gun mind you, but a clean circa 1962 M1 Carbine! It's an early Plainfield Machine model, serial number is B3xx which meas it was made between 1962 and 1965 according to this site: http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_Plainfield02.html. I figure since they made almost 6,000 annually and this one is so early in the serials, it's got to be a '62. Not quite as sought-after as the WWII GI units, but definitely in the nicer civilian models.
We took it out shooting, its a sweet little thing and shoots smoothly. Took a little cleaning in and out from sitting for a while with previous owner (Vietnam vet who bought it and kept it), but it's in pretty much original condition and that's the way it should be!

I have to admit, I am more jealous of Chris' fun with the 1911's though. I've just never been a huge M1 Carbine fan, nothing against them. I would take a Garand in a heartbeat though.

Its a cool little gun, much more character than a Ruger 10/22. I love the story behind them and the classic styling is very recognizable. Also the recoil is fairly mild with it, I can see myself teaching my daughter to shoot with it in a couple years...
