Good tips guys, I'm at very least going to look into a large circuit breaker for the positive battery cable. Seems like a nice minimum effort sort of thing. I live in a pretty chill area right now, but there are whispers of me moving in the future and the next place might not be so small-towney...

Like the tack-welds on the bolts idea too, I need a welder! I remember Steve with the monster SASed green 4Runner had a custom bracket he padlocked over his clutch lever to prevent free-spooling the drum, I'm not sure I have a great way to implement that sort of thing right now though.
