Thread: Interference Motors

    Interference Motors

Does anyone have a list or know which Toyota motors are interference motors. I mainly interested in the ones they mount transverse, but all would be nice.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Interference Motors

Ok, I'll bite. So an interference motor is a motor having a timing belt in lieu of a timing chain?

    MZ series engines

Transfersally mounted, found in highlander, rx series, es series, camry, etc.

    Re: Interference Motors

No, I mean interference, like your valvetrain interferes with the pistons, and your timing chain/belt is the only thing that seperates them from killing each other.

    3vz (3.0 v6)is interference, 5vz (3.4 v6) is NOT.

i am guessing that newer motors are probably non interference. huge guess though.

ill see what i can track down for you though.

most newer motors are interference - higher efficiency, higher power, tighter tolerances all contribute to moving parts being placed closer and only separated by precise timing (along with the metallurgy that allows closer placement)

    BTW -> 7MGE = non-interference . . . I would assume 7MGTE, 6MGE, 5MGE also follow suit

    Re: Interference Motors

    from a google search

    As for Supra motors...

4M- may not be interference...given most of the family isn't, I'd put a fin down on that one being the same.

    5M-GE is non interference

6M-GE Probably not interference. None of the other cousins of this era are, again, I'd be willing to be a fiver on that.

7M-GE and 7M-GTE are non interference...

1jz-GTE unsure. I've only seen one report, and it said no, but no tech articles I've seen to date cover that little detail.

2jz-GE and 2jz-GTE are non interference (see next note)

    2jz-GE and 2jz-GTE are interference in VVT-I format (1998+)

1G...no idea...strange little econobox motor that has almost no information out there on it. Such an odd motor that it wouldn't surprise me if it was interference, but again, I have no idea on that.

    Re: Interference Motors

    2jz motors are non-interference
VVTi (98+) 2jz motors are interference

    1MZ-FE is non-interference
    1MZ-FE with VVTi is interference
    3MZ-FE is interference

    All VZ blocks are non-interference

    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/ar...c/37831-1.html

    4A-FE is a non-interference
    4A-GE is interference

    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/ar.../185520-1.html

    I also found this:

    Engine: Interference
    1.5 (1A-C, 3A-C) Yes
    1.5 (5E-FE) No
    1.6 (SOHC) No
    1.6 (DOHC) Yes
    1.8 (Gas) No
    1.8 (Diesel) Yes
    2.0 No
    2.2 (Gas) No
    2.2 (Diesel) Yes
    2.4 (Diesel) Yes
    2.5 No
    2.8 No
    3.0 (Inline 6) No
    3.0 (2JZ-GE) Yes
    3.0 V-6) No
    3.4 No
    4.7 Yes

That's all I've found so far. Not sure how reliable the above information is, and I've found several discrepancies (ie the 2jz). I'll see what else I can dig up.
