Yeah, that's my guess as well. I was trying to find info on all the GR series motors last night, but gave up after a bit. I'll try to work on it more later.
It does seem that many of Toyota's VVTi motors are interference. Interesting.

It appears that the GR series motors are interference.
I also ran across several posts on various forums with people claiming that all VVTi motors are intereference. This seems consistant with what we've found so far.
Also, the VVTi versions of the 1MZ motors were interference, so I'll go back on edit one of my previous posts.
Currently trying to find info on the UR sereis.

this is correct I believe all VVTI motors are interference.
I can't remember if it is the 2ZZ or what that is in the Celica, but I know that if the chain goes, say good bye to your valve train...
