If you're in the States (USA) and not living in California, one option is Northwest Metal Products. (http://www.nwmp.com/fueltanks.asp) They offer a few different styles (gravity fed and electrical pump) to the original tank which sits between the frame rail where your stock spare tire used to be.

If you want a direct tank replacement from the stock location to the rear where the spare resides, you're better off going to a local aluminum/stainless steel welder and having them building something to your specification.

You could also do what BruceTS did and take a tank out of a ford and put it where the spare use to go.

Yeah there's a long list of "can't do won't work" due to the CARB stuff.

Basically anything out side of stock is a "no no".

Have you tried to buy a good/nice gas can lately? I picked a few up last time I was in Oregon.

Re: Opposite Lock aux fuel tank question

You would think but there's a reason for the madness.

Custom fuel tanks are not CARB legal because they don't go thru the same emissions / environmental testing a factory tank would. The custom tanks may not be designed with the proper vents required and the emissions standard of the vehicle you're building it for. Besides the obvious "leak-proof" design, a lot of has to do with making sure these aftermarket tanks do not damage the environment so it's really a big deal and a valid one.

It definitely makes it difficult for us to build but it is a necessary evil. The bottom line is that the CARB guys are not a big fan of non-factory stuff so it really puts a big damper on passing the emissions test when your vehicle is up for your smog test. One thing to note is that you may pass the emissions test if you have your tank properly configured but you definitely won't pass the "visual" part. It's lame though since if you pass the emissions test I don't see why the "visual" part is even a factor.

Anyway, I say if you can go with a stock tank then you're in good shape. I forgot about the Ford tank that Bruce did on his 4runner so that's definitely an alternative solution!

And to add to what Mike said, have you tried buyin fuel cans? My gosh the requirement on those "spill proof" spouts are lame! They don't even work and actually make a bigger mess than the old school standard spouts! Sadly the Scepter plastic cans that I got years ago are no longer available in CA due to the "non-spill proof" spouts. Those are pretty stout cans and definitely something I'll use "forever!"
